Methodology
Here, we will derive the equations to calculate the uncertainty in the flux. Uncertainty is calculated by applying the error propagation equation. This is applicable when uncertainties are independent and random.

Bulk formula
The following expression is used to quantify the air-sea \(\text{CO}_2\) flux (\(\text{FCO}_2\)) from gridded datasets in terms of gas transfer velocity (\(k_w\)), solubility (\(K_o\)), sea-ice fraction in the grid cell (\(f_{ice}\)), and the difference in \(\text{pCO}_2\) between the atmosphere and the ocean (\(\Delta \text{pCO}_2\)):
Gas transfer velocity
There are various formulations for the gas transfer velocity that are applicable across a range of wind speeds. Here, we use the Wanninkhof 2014 parameterization, which depends on the square of the wind speed as well as the Schmidt number through the following parameterization:
where \(a\) is a scaling factor; \(\langle U^2 \rangle\) is the average of the 10m neutral stability wind speed (\(U_{10}\)) squared, i.e., the second moment; and \(Sc\) is the dimensionless Schmidt number. This parameterization was chosen given its widely accepted use in the literature, including data products and models.
Schmidt number
The Schmidt number is defined as the kinematic viscosity of water divided by the molecular diffusion coefficient of the gas in water. Wanninkhof 2014 provides a fourth-order polynomial fit versus temperature:
